When Storytellers of Ireland hosted the annual conference of the Federation for European Storytelling in 2017, we organised the event under the title Storytelling in Borderlands. We based the conference in the An Grianán Centre in Termonfeckin in Co. Louth, where we housed, watered and fed our 110 delegates from 29 different countries. We bookended the 4-day event with a bonfire gathering (where Midsummer Eve traditions from around the continent were shared) and a mini Storytelling festival in South Armagh, which featured 6 leading tellers from Europe. An overall intention of ours was to introduce our guests to the cultural heritage in stories, songs and historic sites of these border counties. Our Thursday night concert celebrated the culture of the Ancient Kingdom of Oriel and was filmed by Brian Doyle of the Irish Traditional Music Archive. Oriel covered present-day parts of the counties of Armagh, Monaghan and Louth and Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin’s great tome of research, A Hidden Ulster, surveys several centuries of the area’s literary and musical richness, something we hoped to hint at in our presentation.
A one-hour edited version of some of the highlights of the evening will be made available for free viewing next week by the ITMA.
The video will premiere on the ITMA Facebook Page
and the ITMA YouTube Channel
at 3 pm (Irish time) on Friday 25 June 2021, and remain available to view on both platforms. Storytellers of Ireland will also share the event on our Facebook page.
Storytellers of Ireland salute and thank ITMA for their offer to open this document from their archive to the general public.
